Laborers

Experienced Construction Craft Laborers rely on a diverse set of skills on a wide variety of job sites.

Members build roads, bridges, tunnels, transit stations, water and energy systems as well as work on building, demolition, and renovation projects.

Laborers also assist in the construction and maintenance of power plants and substations, dig trenches for lines, repair roads after line installation, and build supporting infrastructure such as oil and gas pipelines.
LIUNA members are skilled in excavation, tending, scaffolding, concrete placement, environmental remediation, asbestos and lead abatement, flagging, power and hand tools, and general clean up among a variety of other skills. LIUNA is known as the first trade on the job and the last trade to leave.

Through LIUNA Training’s Construction Craft Laborer Apprenticeship Program, members are prepared for a rewarding career in construction.

Requirements
  • At least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Apprentices also have the option of achieving a high school degree or equivalency while enrolled in the CCL program.

Apprenticeship Training
To become an apprentice, an individual must be 18 years of age and have earned a high school degree or its equivalency. Apprentices also have the option of achieving a high school degree or equivalency while enrolled in the CCL program.

Career skills are gained two ways: the first is through related instruction that combines classroom and job simulated, hands-on training; the second is on-the-job learning, where CCL apprentices “earn while they learn.”

In the Construction Craft Laborer Apprenticeship Program, an apprentice must complete 4,000 hours of on-the-job learning and successfully complete a minimum of 320 hours of related instruction in order to graduate. While many apprentices complete the requirements in two years, it may take longer depending upon availability of work.

Upon graduation the apprentice joins the rank of journey-persons and begins a career as a skilled CCL. As a member of LIUNA training never ends as life-long learning opportunities are available year-round to meet the challenges in one of the most diverse and rewarding industries.
