Apprenticeship: Five years
About
Sheet metal workers fabricate and install ducts used for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. They will often work with products made of light or thin galvanized metals for siding or metal decks. They also work with heavy metals which are welded for column guards or blowpipe systems.
Requirements
Apprenticeship Training
The apprenticeship requires 208 hours of related training per year at a training facility. Related training will consist of:
Classroom training occurs on Monday thru Thursday evenings for all years (1-5) apprentice students.

Requirements
- At least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or GED
- Physically capable for nature of work
- Strong mathematical skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Successfully pass a drug screen
- Upon being selected, an apprentice must and apply and pay for a state license through the Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board. License fee is $50.
Apprenticeship Training

- Mathematics
- Drafting
- Pattern development and layout process
- System design
- Detailing
- Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
- Welding
